Doctor Who – Eleventh Hour

Posted in: Uncategorized |

So eventually the eleventh Doctor Who has arrived, debuting properly along with his first complete Doctor Who episode, ‘The Eleventh Hour’ over the Easter holiday within the UK. The hour-long first episode of Doctor Who series 5 was written by new series entrant Steven Moffat, and if it's a good instance of things to come with this series, then followers of the longest running sf program in history are in for a great ride. Matt Smith is instantly likeable as the eleventh Doctor who, who, regardless of his youth, brings with him a substantial amount of that all-necessary gravitas and genius that the Doctor all the time needs.

He is immediately into the part, and commands every scene he’s in. Amy Pond, performed by Karen Gillan, is going to take a little bit more getting used to, and I am by now sick of everybody talking about how attractive she is. Hopefully the focus will move to her acting and the stories once she is not running around in a kinky policewoman’s outfit. This primary story in the eleventh Doctor Who series is a reasonably standard earthbound SF tale, however it's in how issues are brought to a climax that the fantastic thing about Moffat’s writing lies.

The way wherein the eleventh Doctor Who triumphs over the latest threat, and saves the planet in simply 20 minutes, is outstanding. The episode is superbly put together, and while the effects are somewhat dodgy sometimes, it is possibly one of the best ‘New Doctor’ episode we have enjoyed since the show got here again in 2005.

The direction and editing are great, however the music lets the episode down in a few parts, most notably the new rendering of the famous Doctor Whotheme tune. I do like the new title sequence nevertheless. The latest TARDIS is superb, the eleventh Doctor Who shows potential and Amy shows potential. In all, it is a great start to what will optimistically be a considerable run of this real establishment of genre tv.
